"Dance-a-Day" is a week-long collaboration between composers and choreographers at UNC School of the Arts. Every morning, we had an hour and half of collaboration time to create various modern dance pieces. As such, the end result involved a lot of creative problem-solving.
"Factory" (choreographed by Emily Hopfenberg) was based off of a methodical prompt. The harmony is based off of a series of numbers, which shorten by an eighth-note on every repetition. Numbers which had associated colors in the prompt were given melodic snippets.
"The Milgram Experiment" (choreographed by Garrett Parker) was inspired by the titular psychological experiment. Garrett's ideas about rhythm and layering greatly informed the composition.
"Under a Ladder" (choreographed by Brooke Partin) took its inspiration from the mood of the dance. It was so titled because my computer crashed towards the end.
"Pokémario" (choreographed by Kristen Hedberg) is classic video game music. Kristen envisioned four different "levels" of a game, and so I obliged with catchy variations on an original theme.
"Outcomes of War" (choreographed by Kristen Hedberg and Garrett Parker) is a deep and dark piece with a middle section of considerable (yet sparse) energy. As the longest piece in the set, both music and choreography took inspiration from the music of previous days.
