about

As part of the Dance-a-Day collaboration at UNC School of the Arts, composers and choreographers work together for an hour and a half every morning to collaborate on a new modern dance work, with the goal of creating a cohesive creative expression; the goal is not the lofty (and impossible) task of creating a full-fledged modern dance piece in the time allotted. This was the first of three dances for which I wrote music for 2017.

Molly wanted the dance to express social awkwardness and the stages of becoming friends with someone else. Musically, this manifested in six chords, each originally ten seconds long, where the higher and lower synth arpeggiators meet in the middle, thinning out and becoming more consonant at each iteration. Molly’s input had a great impact on the end of the piece, with the percussion cue and the gradual textural thinning from Eb Lydian to spare open fifths, which synced well with the structure of the music.
