As part of the Dance-a-Day collaboration at UNC School of the Arts, composers and choreographers work together for an hour and a half every morning to collaborate on a new modern dance work, with the goal of creating a cohesive creative expression; the goal is not the lofty (and impossible) task of creating a full-fledged modern dance piece in the time allotted. This was the second of three dances for which I wrote music for 2017.

This was the second day I worked with Molly, but this time the daily prompt had changed to “one thing,” which was very vague. We initially had a plan of attack which involved a recurring musical and gestural motif, but during the process we ended up treating it more as a theme and variations, treating the dance phrases as akin to musical phrases (a convenient terminological overlap).
